Redhead Reopens (Tentatively) May 5 – Here’s What You Need to Know
Spring is here, and we’re getting closer to that moment we’ve all been waiting for: Redhead Mountain Bike Park is set to reopen May 5!* While most trail systems in the region are still drying out, Redhead gets a head start—thanks to its unique surface made up of iron-rich mine rock. Unlike clay or dirt trails that hold moisture, Redhead drains quickly, allowing us to ride sooner, and often longer, into the season.
Why Redhead Opens Early
It’s not just luck—it’s geology. The iron content in our trails means they dry faster, resist ruts better, and bounce back quickly after wet weather. But just because the rock is tough doesn’t mean the trails take care of themselves.
That’s where the Iron Range Off-Road Cyclists (IROC) come in.
Meet the Trail Champions: IROC Volunteers
Redhead's early opening and year-round awesomeness wouldn't be possible without the dedicated IROC volunteers who adopt trails, perform maintenance, and monitor conditions. They’re the ones out there clearing debris, fixing damage, and making sure every berm, drop, and switchback is good to go.
Come Say Thanks – and Get Involved!
Join us for the Volunteer Appreciation & Training event on May 4 at Redhead, hosted by IROC. It’s a great way to meet the crew behind the scenes, learn what goes into keeping Redhead ride-ready, and maybe even find your place in the trail family.

A Quick Word on Trail Etiquette
Even with iron-rich rock, trail conditions can vary in early spring. Please respect closures and always follow the golden rule of mountain biking:
If you're leaving tracks, it's too wet to ride… or hike.
Avoid riding on soft trails to prevent ruts that can take weeks to fix. And remember: if a trail is closed, it’s for good reason—help us preserve what makes Redhead awesome.
📅 Mark your calendar for May 5—but stay tuned. Opening is tentative based on trail conditions, and updates will be shared on Trailforks, Trailbot and our socials and website as we get closer.
